Silver Sands Beach, Aberdour. A family day trip at the seaside in Scotland

Silversands- a family seaside day trip from Edinburgh

Aberdour Silver Sands is one of the most popular beaches on the Fife coast.
The beach is clean and on a sunny day – like the one we got on our visit- the view and tranquility are making this an ideal place for a family day trip away from Edinburgh.

There is a beachfront café, a public toilets, first aid, and playground – ideal for families with small children.

A family day at the seaside

Plan your journey

Scotland has some beautiful, uncrowded beaches. I am going to write a post about what others you should consider if you’re planning a day by the sea.

It is fair to say that using a car to travel around is perhaps the best option. But travel by train or bus are alternatives worth considering.

For us, Silver Sands Breach (or Silversands) is about 45 minutes drive away from Edinburgh (depending on your route). So an ideal day trip for our family.

Pack for a day at the seaside

A list with items we have in our ‘outdoor activities’ box in the garage. Some of these items are reused over and over again, and although these are link to products we recomment because we are using and like, have a look around for alternatives.

1. Picnic blankets: we have one from M&S, and the other one bought from Amazon- from here;

2. Frisbee: have a look at this one here  but often, supermarkets with toy sections will store them.

3. Pétanque (the best £7 we have ever spent on a game- have a look here)

4. Wellington boots for the adults and the boys (although only one of them is wearing wellingtons these days 🙂 ): for my other half we bough these ones,  these for one of the boys.

And this was us on the way to Silversands.

Fun family activities to do at the beach

1. Get the frisbee out!

Nothing compares to a good old game of frisbee. This is one of those games that brings together kids and adults, regardless of their age.

2. Try a game of Pétanque

We got our first game of pétanque a few years ago, my other half’s parents. I didn’t make much of it, but we took it with us on a family holiday, and since then it has become a staple.

Pétanque has some similarities to a game of balls, but is more of a tossing game. We don’t play by the book 🙂 but we have great fun as a family.

Like the frisbee, pétanque is a great family game.

3. Lunch in the beachfront café

Sands A Place By The Sea is a great place for lunch (if you are not bringing a packed lunch).

The restaurant staff is very friendly and the food was absolutely super: the chef’s steak pie, scampi and chips, soup of the day, and a burger.
